March 4, 2008
The Sacramento State women’s rugby team lost Saturday to UC Santa Cruz. The Santa Cruz Slugs, currently ranked as the Division II Champions of the United States, edged out the Hornets with a score of 12-7.
Sac State failed to score any tries during the first half of the game despite holding possession of the ball for the majority of the time. Sac State managed to drive the ball all the way to the 1-yard line but couldn’t score before half-time was called.
Santa Cruz scored its two tries of the game and a single conversion kick during its brief possessions in the first half.
Early in the second half, Vanessa “P.J.” Talancon, a true freshman majoring in kinesiology, scored the Hornets’ first try of the game and was followed by a conversion kick by Pam Ames, a junior majoring in civil engineering.
The Hornets held up the defense against the Slugs for the remainder of the game, maintaining their advantage throughout the second half.
The women’s rugby team ends its season with two wins and a single loss and will enter the playoffs on April 5 in Oregon.
