It was an exciting day for the Sacramento State track and field team, which swept the Big Sky Conference titles for the indoor season this weekend in Pocatello, Idaho.

“This moment is exciting for us coaches and the athletes to win the conference in both men’s and women’s. We are just blessed right now and all of the hard work they have been putting in paid off,” track and field coach Kathleen Raske said.

The championship came down to the 4×400 meter relay where both Sac State teams pulled off victories. To cap a nice season for the Hornets, one of their senior athletes made history in the Big Sky Conference. Raphael McFarland was awarded MVP for both field events and track events, where he scored 38 combined points to help the men’s team keep the Big Sky indoor Championship in the Hornet’s nest. “This is how I wanted to end the season — with me and my teammates winning Big Sky. The MVP was just the icing on the cake,” McFarland said. After this championship season the Hornets look to start off strong in outdoor competition. Their first meet is March 15 at Sacramento City College.
