Mindless cyclists, pedestrians make walkways hazardous
March 11, 2008
Pedestrians — we’ve all been one. However, some of us need an instruction manual like the ones the DMV gives to potential drivers.
What happened to looking left and right before crossing the street? It feels as if common sense has been thrown out the window. When you look at the other side of the crosswalk and there is a big orange hand symbolizing not to cross the street, don’t cross the street.
Everything has a symbol and this is one that is most frequently ignored. One morning, as I was driving to school, a woman crossed the street in front of me when my light was clearly green. I had to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting her.
There is a saying that claims that people don’t learn until they or someone they love gets hurt. I truly believe that. Pedestrians do have the right-of-way, but they are irresponsible when it comes to using it.
Bicyclists on this campus are also in this spectrum of irresponsibility. I’m not talking about the ones that are leisurely going to class. I’m talking about the ones who dress like they are ready to go race in the Tour de France like Lance Armstrong.
These particular bicyclists are rude and do not stop for anything or anyone. Seriously, get over yourself because if it was really going to happen, you would already be there.
One morning, about a week ago, I was leaving Mendocino Hall when a bicyclist, as previously described, came racing around the corner of the building. He had come so close to me that I instinctively jumped back so I would not be run over. There was no apology – nothing. He kept going at the same rate and didn’t look back.
Next to the bike racks, facing Riverside Hall, there is a sign that says to dismount between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Obviously, this sign serves no purpose when it goes unnoticed like many other signs and symbols. These morons need to lay off the human growth hormone and start paying attention before someone gets seriously hurt.
