Hornets take first place
March 16, 2008
The Sacramento State Hornets gymnastics team finished first in the quad meet hosted by Sac State with a season-high of 195.250.
“It’s a huge win,” senior Nicole Giao said.
She said with four teams and such a large crowd the meet could have gone in any directions.
Coach Kim Hughes said the team’s score has been steadily improving.
“I feel like we’re more competitive,” he said.
The night was also highlighted as senior night for the five seniors (Melissa Genovese, Giao, Alexis Tsurumoto, Alyssa Onaga, and Hava McCarter-Ribakoff) who competed for their final time in the Hornets Nest. Genovese ended her time in the Hornets Nest on a high note as she recorded a 9.950 on the beam giving her her 22nd victory on the beam and the top score in the Hornets record books.
Hughes and assistant coach Tami Ross said she is a deserving person of this honor.
“I was so happy, because she has worked so hard,” Ross said. “She’s naturally beautiful on beam.”
Genovese said getting the honor was amazing, but words could not describe how she felt.
Freshman Alycia Chan took third on the vault. Junior Marina Borisova took first and sophomore Lauren Dyson took second on the bars. Behind Genovese Borisova placed second on the beam tieing her personal best. Sac State swept the top two spots on floor as Borisova and Chan tied for second and Genovese and sophomore Eryn Stubblefield took first. Stubblefield posted a personal best in the event.
Cal placed second (193.700), UC Davis finished third (192.625) and Seattle Pacific placed fourth (190.075).
The Hornets will compete in the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational Saturday in Corvallis, Ore.
