Babycakes satisfies your sweet tooth

There’s nothing baby about the cupcakes served at Babycakes Bakery. Located at 3675 J St., Babycakes is just a nook in the wall, but don’t let the small appearance fool you.

Inside this small bakery are cupcakes that will satisfy any sweet and sugary craving.

SceneBabycakes bakery is a small family owned bakery. The bakery is just a niche in the wall with nothing much to look at but the cupcakes, the menu and the baker baking. The bakery has only been open for about one month and there aren’t even any tables and chairs for customers to sit at, but will soon be added. It’s no surprise that people usually order their cupcakes to go. Babycakes is only a bus ride away from Sac State, which makes its location convenient to students who want to try an off campus eatery. Starbucks and Midtown Taqueria are close so you can bring your cupcakes to their tables.

FoodThe moment you walk into the bakery the cupcakes instantly grab your attention. Looking at the triple chocolate cupcakes, caramel apple cupcakes, and lemon meringue cupcakes was enough to make me salivate. The menu alternates everyday and the cupcakes sell for around $2 to $2.50.

Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays include the lemon meringue; which is a sour cream-vanilla cake, filled with lemon curd and burnt Swiss meringue. Chocolate mint and caramel apple are also included on those days. Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays include the rocky road; which is a dark chocolate cake, glossy fudge frosting with roasted almonds, toasted with house-made marshmallows. Coconut-lime and banana split are also included on those days.

Part of what makes the cupcakes special is the unique ingredients that go into every cupcake. Sprinkles on the chocolate cupcakes are imported from France. The chocolates and marshmallows used in the cupcakes are made from scratch. The raspberry and lemon meringue have real raspberry and lemon curd injected into them.

It’s these little additions that give the cupcakes their unique look and taste. Babycakes also offers seasonal specialty sandwiches and salads. Sandwiches like the roasted turkey and natural ham. The sandwiches range from $5.50 to $6.50. But honestly, who goes to a cupcake bakery to order sandwiches?

TasteI had the banana split and the raspberry vanilla and to say that they were delicious is an understatement. After taking a couple of bites of my banana split cupcake I got light-headed and dizzy. I don’t know if that’s a testament to the deliciousness of the cupcake or if there was something wrong with me that day. But every part of that cupcake was delicious. Even the bread had its own unique flavor and that’s without the help of the icing or filling.

OverallI could spend an entire day describing how good the cupcakes are at Babycakes, but there are not enough words to describe the assortment of flavors and tastes that go with each cupcake. If you’re a person who has a large sweet tooth and you’re tired of donuts and ice cream then I recommend you try Babycakes. In fact, I recommend everyone try Babycakes at least once.

On the other hand, as a college student I think that the $2 price tag for each cupcake is a bit much. Two cupcakes cost about the same as two Burger King burgers, or one decently sized burrito. But then again, if you want to taste what local bakeries have to offer then try Babycakes Bakery.
