Hornet volleyball sends Aggies to pasture
October 17, 2007
The Sacramento State women’s volleyball team swept the University of California Davis Aggies in a 3-0, non-conference match Wednesday night in the Hornets Nest.
It was the 15 consecutive win for the Hornets who are now 21-3 overall and the victory marks 13 consecutive seasons with 20 wins or more.
Hornet defense was on fire with 53 team digs and seven team blocks. The Aggies had 50 digs and four blocks.
Senior middle hitter Michelle Franz said its dedication to blocking in practice that was a factor in how well the team blocked.
She also credits the victory to the level of defense the team showed.
“We were passing really well and it opens up a lot more options for us. It helps the game all around and lets us set outside and set the middles and run our plays,” Franz said.
Senior middle hitter Lindsay Haupt also thinks that defense allowed the team to run more plays and play together as a team.
“When we pass well in a game we can run every single option and it makes it really tough for another team to block a team like us because we have so many different options.”
“We have a lot of plays with our outsides and our middles, like we can bring Missie around the back and we can bring Jenny (Ferguson) around for the C,” Haupt said.
Coach Debby Colberg was impressed with the defensive part of tonight’s game.
“I thought we played defense really well for two games and it just takes so much effort and you really need to keep your intensity up,” Colberg said.
The victory over the Aggies improves the all-time record of the two rivals to 48-16 in favor of the Hornets.
The team’s next game will be on the road, this time taking on Northern Colorado on Oct. 25. The team won’t be back home until Oct. 30 when the Hornets play Nevada.
