UC Davis hands Sac State Hornets its first loss

 

The Hornets (3-1-1) women’s soccer team fell to the Aggies

 

(4-2-0) 3-2 in double overtime on Sunday at UC Davis. The loss followed a 3-3 tie to Nevada on Friday that went into double overtime.

 

Seniors Katie McCoy and Amanda Gray scored one goal each and Mandy Trojan recorded six saves in the loss. McCoy and Gray lead Sacramento State with four and three goals on the season, respectively.

 

The Hornets outshot the Aggies 16-13, but UC Davis managed to net three of its nine shots on goal, with Sac State only making two of four.

 

McCoy and Stidham earned Player of the Week honor

 

Katie McCoy was named Big Sky co-Offensive Player of the Week during the week of Sept. 3.

 

McCoy tallied one goal and three assists in the 5-1 victory over Fresno State and the 2-0 win over San Jose.

 

She shares the honor with Idaho State sophomore Jana Boehler, who tops the Bengals (3-4-0) with two goals and two assists.

 

Senior outside hitter Missie Stidham earned both the AVCA

 

(American Volleyball Coaches Association) National and Big Sky Conference Volleyball Player of the Week award.

 

Sac State volleyball wins another preseason tourney

 

The volleyball team beat No. 14 Cal Poly and Xavier and took the title at the USF Volleyball Invitational on Saturday at War

 

Memorial Gym.

 

The Hornets swept host USF (on Friday) and Xavier and took out No. 14 Cal Poly 3-1 to snag its second preseason title.

 

Seniors Missie Stidham and Lindsay Haupt led Sac State on

 

Saturday and posted 47 and 21 kills, respectively. Haupt also made 17 blocks in both matches.

 

Stidham (MVP), Haupt and senior Jennifer Ferguson were named to the all-tournament team.

 

Abbott hired as Sac State cross country coach

 

Scott Abbott, a former Jesuit High School and UCLA standout, was hired to coach the Hornets cross country team.

 

Abbott began coaching during the Hornet Invitational.

 

He will also be the distance coach for Sac State’s indoor and outdoor track and field.

 

Muscatell announced an addition to women’s basketball

 

Coach Dan Muscatell announced the addition of freshman guard Tika Koshiyama-Diaz to the roster, as well as the loss of a senior.

 

Senior Ali Mollet will redshirt the season. She will be recovering from a surgery during the offseason.

 

Koshiyama-Diaz earned four-year letters at Pinewood High School in Los Altos Hills. She averaged 9.5 points, 7 assists and 2.8 steals per game during her senior year, where she earned first team all-Private School Athletic League honors.

 

Mollet only played in eight games last year and will miss the

 

entire 2007-2008 season.
