Late game push falls short
September 3, 2007
The Hornet men’s soccer team played the Dayton Flyers and suffered its first loss of the season with a score of 2-1 on Friday. As the first game of the season for both teams, six hundred people came to see the inaugural Dayton Marriot Classic.
The Flyers attempted seven shots on goal, while the Hornets attempted three. Hornet goalie Ryan Kenney provided five saves on the night. The Flyers scored one goal in each half and Brady Nunes scored the lone Hornet goal on a breakaway in the 83rd minute.
The Flyers were ahead by two late in the game after a goal in the 81st minute by forward Tyler Imbrogno when the Hornets attempted a comeback. The Hornets had a shot on goal in the 89th minute by Alex DeTorres, but missed wide and time expired shortly after.
The Hornets nearly knotted it up at the end of the first half, but Travis Britt’s header in the 37th minute bounced off the goalpost.
The only other time the Flyers and the Hornets faced off was in 2005 and the Hornets won the game at Hornet Field 1-0. The Hornets next game will be against the Butler Bulldogs on Sunday, Sept. 2, to conclude the Dayton Marriot Flyer Classic.
