The Sacramento State women’s soccer team gave Randy Dedini his first victory as head coach.

The Hornets beat the Mount Saint Mary’s Mountaineers 4-0 Sunday at Hornet Field.

“(Sac State) is a good squad,” said Mount St. Mary’s head coach Ron Gosselin. “They are well coached and played very well.”

Sac State took some time to get going, getting only one goal off five attempts in the first half.

Senior Katie McCoy put the Hornets on the board first when she scored off an assist from junior Missy Matzen in the 25th minute.

“We started slow,” Dedini said.

With only one goal in the first half, Sac State picked up the pace and added six more shots-on-goal in the second half recording three goals.

“We put them away early in the second half,” Dedini said.

The Hornets took control of the ball and maintained position on the Mountaineers’ side throughout the game, keeping senior goalie Anna Lebo on her feet.

“It’s a lot of pressure. There is a lot of people coming at you,” Lebo said.

Dedini said he is pleased with the victory, but since Sac State was picked to win league, the Hornets are looked at as the team to beat.

“It puts a target on us,” he said. “We have to take it one game at a time.”
