Sacramento State soundly defeated the Montana Grizzlies 7-0 to win the Big Sky regular season title on Monday. The Hornets won their seventh match in a row and improved to 11-3 overall and 6-0 in conference.

The doubles first took the court with Sac State taking all three matches to take the doubles point.

Anton Stryhas and Gabriel Loredo notched another win at No. 1 doubles. They came back from a break down and broke back to take the match 8-6.

The Hornets No. 2 doubles tandem of Hague Van Dillen and Xavier Barajas-Smith won 8-2 while No. 3 Ramon Perez and Warwick Foy won 8-4.

Because of rain, the singles matches were showcased indoors where No. 1 Barajas-Smith and No. 2 Stryhas helped dismantle the Grizzlies.

Anton Stryhas won 6-0, 6-1. He attacked the net more and controlled the points with superb volleying.

“I felt better playing indoors,” Stryhas said.

Number three Gabriel Loredo won yet again while No. 4 Warwick Foy won 7-6, 7-5.

Foy fell in a crushing match Sunday, but responded despite not playing his best tennis.

“A win’s a win. It’s good to win even when you are not playing well,” he said.

Number five Ramon Perez won 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to complete his perfect Big Sky singles play.

Tim Lantin won at No. 6 for the Hornets who are hoping for a crack at top 20 Boise State later this week.

The win ensured that the Hornets will have the number one seed in the Big Sky Conference Tournament. They also wrapped up the right to host the tourney, which runs from April 27-29 at Gold River Racquet Club.

Sac State begins the Boise State tournament in the first round against Division III’s No. 1 UC Santa Cruz on Wednesday in Boise.
