St. Mary’s College strolled into Shea Stadium on Saturday hoping to hand the Sacramento State softball team their fifth and sixth straight losses, but they left Shea Stadium having played 14 innings without scoring one run.

The Hornets shut out the Gaels 3-0 in the first game, and then proceeded to blow St. Mary’s out 7-0 in the second game. The wins were the hornets first of the year, as the team dropped four games during the opening weekend.

“I think we were just a little late in coming out of the chute,” coach Kathy Strahan said.

In game one, Sac State’s Jillian Bivert pitched seven strong innings giving up only three hits, and knotching her first career shutout.

The Hornet offense took control in the bottom of the third inning putting two runs on the scoreboard. Bivert started off the scoring ambush with a single. Catcher Erin Coyne then smacked a single into right field advancing Bivert to third.

Freshman Michelle Bariao then came into pinch run for Coyne and was able to catch the Gaels off guard, stealing second base. In an attempt to tag Bariao out at second, the Gaels committed an error on a misdirected throw which was able to allow Bivert to score safely and get Bariao to third base.

With a 1-0 lead, freshman shortstop Amy Hillel connected on a sacrifice fly to send Bariao across the plate and put the Hornets up 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, following a Lori Meixner single, senior Mary Villalpando laid down a bunt that allowed Meixner to safely advance to second base and also left Villalpando safe at first.

The Hornet’s Megan Cunningham then drove the ball between first and second to allow Meixner to score, giving Bivert all the support she would need.

Sac State finished the game with 11 hits and zero errors. In their four losses last weekend, The Hornets committed 10 errors.

“It feels great to finally get in that win margin,” Strahan said.

In the second game of the doubleheader, sophomore Nicole Deatherage took the mound for the Hornets against St. Mary’s Sara Weidlin.

Wiedlin gave up seven runs and ten hits against the Hornet offense and did not receive much support from her defense, which committed three errors.

Deatherage, meanwhile, only allowed four hits and the Hornet defense didn’t commit any errors, while turning three double plays. The Hornets lit up the scoreboard as they scored seven runs and again held the Gaels scoreless.

“We’re hitting it hard and just seeing it better,” said Villalpando, “We’re on our game. We worked hard this week at practice. We took a lot of live and it helped out a lot.”

The Hornet offense first pounced in the bottom of the second inning when Meixner doubled to right field. Wiedlin then walked sophomore Amber Dragomir, who promptly stole second base and on an errant throw allowed Meixner to come home for the first score of the game.

Senior Alison Norman came into pinch run for Coyne before Cunningham came to the plate.

With the bases loaded, Cunningham connected on a base hit to center field, bringing in Bivert and Norman to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead at the end of the third inning.

The Hornets scored three more runs in the fourth inning, and one more in the fifth to close out the game.

Deatherage got her first win of the season after seven scoreless innings. The Hornets finished the weekend with 21 hits, zero errors, and seven RBI’s.

“Winning felt awesome. We feel really strong and have a tighter bond than last year”, Villalpando said.

Sac State will next try to get past San Jose St. in a home game on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Shea Stadium
