Dawson leads Hornets with 30 in 110-97 win over Northern Arizona

The Sacramento State men’s basketball team shot its winning streak to three games on Saturday with a 110-97 win over Northern Arizona.

The Hornets were led by leading scorer Joseth Dawson, who tied his career-high with a game-high 30 points. He was perfect from the free throw line, 14 of 14, and is second in the conference with 96 made free throws.

Sac State lost earlier in the season to the Lumberjacks, 80-73 at home, but with this win the Hornets got their first victory on the road since an overtime win at Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 29.

Jameel Pugh scored his most points ever in Hornets uniform, knocking down 9 of 14 from the floor and finishing with 22 points and five rebounds. Jones, who is averaging 14.1 points in the Big Sky finished with 20 points, including netting four 3-pointers. It was the first time in the Hornet Div. I era that three players reached the 20-point mark or more.

Cedric Thompkins contributed 10 rebounds and is currently averaging 7.5 per game in the Big Sky.

Sac State is off to its best start ever in the conference after eight games. With a Big Sky record of 4-4 the Hornets are currently fourth in the standings. The Lumberjacks were led by forwards Aaron Bond and Kodiak Yazzie who scored 21 and 17 points respectively. Sac State will continue its road trip on Thursday when they match up with Big Sky leader Eastern Washington before taking on seventh-placed Portland State on Saturday.
