Women’s tennis flies past Northern Colorado

After losing to 51st-ranked New Mexico on Saturday by a score of 4-3, the Sacramento State women’s tennis team came out determined on Thursday afternoon to get back on track, facing Northern Colorado (4-9, 1-2) at home. The Bears were no match for Sac State as the Hornets rolled to a 7-0 win to improve to 10-4 on the season overall and remain undefeated in the Big Sky at 5-0.

“Northern Colorado was better than I expected, but our team played very well,” Director of Tennis Bill Campbell said.

In doubles play the Hornets swept the Lobos 8-2, 8-1 and 8-6. Katrina Zheltova and Luba Schifris (6-0) played in the number one slot for doubles and crushed their opponents 8-2. Schifris wowed the crowd with drop shots and powerful serves.

At the number two slot Karina Jarlkaganova and Joyce Martinez Gutierrez (3-2) won easily 8-1.

The number three team for the Hornets was Aileen Tsan and Anastassia Lyssenko (13-1).

As their teammates cheered them on the pair rallied to complete the sweep in doubles and won a close match 8-6.

“We played very good and all the matches were pretty easy,” Martinez Dutierrez said.

In singles play the Hornets did very well winning all six matches, five of the six in consecutive sets. The closest of the six matches was in the number one slot between Zheltova and Tabatha Knop, which went to a tie breaker.

Knop took the first set 6-3. The second set Zheltova won 6-3. The final set between the two Zheltova won 10-6, completing the sweep for the Hornets. This weekend the Hornets travel down south and face off against the 13th-ranked University of Pepperdine followed by Loyola Marymount on Sunday.

“We need to work as a team against Pepperdine and cheer each other on. All of us need to play are very best to get the win,” Jarlkaganova said.
