A group of people posing as Sacramento State students has been soliciting homes in Carmichael and El Dorado Hills for donations for a false trip to London, a press release from the university said today.

The Communication Studies Department has received at least two informal complaints about the group, Frank Whitlatch, associate vice president of public affairs, said in a phone interview.

The Sac State Campus Police Department has not received any formal complaints about the suspected impostors, Whitlatch said.

Campus Police would not be involved in any investigation of the events because they allegedly occurred off campus and outside of Campus Police’s jurisdiction, Lt. Dan Davis of Campus Police said.

Whitlatch said that the university wanted to send the message that the public should be wary of anyone claiming to be a Sac State student asking for donations.

“We don’t send out students door-to-door to collect money to go overseas,” Whitlatch said, adding that the university would “informally look into it.”

The Communication Studies Department could not be reached for comment.
