Volleyball blanks Grizzlies

Junior Lindsay Haupt had 12 kills and a career-high .647 hitting percentage as the Sacramento State Hornets volleyball team swept the Montana Grizzles in the Hornets Nest on Thursday.

Haupt, who recorded only one error in 17 attacks, gave freshman Melissa Melcher credit for her high numbers during Thursday’s victory.

“Tonight (I had) excellent setting from Melissa,” she said. “I don’t have to guess where the ball is going to be. It’s nice to be able to look for the block.”

The Hornets (25-5, 12-1 Big Sky) were slow against the Grizzles (12-12, 9-5) in game one, perhaps still deflated after a loss to Portland State last Thursday.

“We hit a rut, but we are moving up from here,” junior Jennifer Ferguson said, who had 12 kills and 12 digs on the night.

Both teams hadn’t brought the “heat” they are used to playing, said Ferguson, which made it anyone’s game.

“We were making too many errors,” coach Debby Colberg said.

The Hornets ended the night with eight serving and three blocking errors.

Montana took advantage of four Sac State service errors building up a five point lead, but the Hornets came back with a 10 point run of their own.

The run began with a Montana service error followed by a diving save from senior Kristin Lutes from the back of the court. She ended the night with 12 digs.

“They were passing poorly and were easy to hit,” Colberg said about the Hornets who took game one 30-23.

Sac State controlled game two better than the first, as they ran out to a five point lead at 17-12. Montana rallied with a four point run, which began off of another Hornets service error.

Colberg called for a time out telling the Hornets to hit the ball in the court.

“She tells us to get our act together,” said Haupt. “It’s a mature relationship.”

“She gives us encouragement and we know we can do it,” Ferguson added.

The Hornets answered back with five consecutive points and went on to win 30-22.

Sac State didn’t hold anything back in game three. They pulled ahead quickly and never looked back beating Montana in the final game of the night 30-17.

“Montana didn’t bring that same game tonight,” Colberg said, referring to the five-game match the teams played on Oct. 12.

Sac State takes on Idaho State in the final home game of the year at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the Nest.
