The Faculty Senate office on Friday announced the recipients of the 2000-01 Outstanding Teaching Awards.

The Outstanding Teaching Awards program, which honors effective teaching by Sacramento State professors, annually chooses recipients from each of the seven university colleges.

“The professors are chosen based on their great teaching ability. That is the highest priority, with the standard question, ‘Are they great teachers?’ ” said Frank Whitlatch, assistant news director of the Public Affairs office.

Another professor, peer or group of students can nominate professors in each of the seven colleges. Nominations are sent to a committee of faculty members who make the final selections.

Professors are evaluated based on teaching effectiveness established and the impact on the lives and careers of students, according to a memo sent out by the provost and vice president of academic affairs.

The selections are then forwarded to the Faculty Senate Office for announcement each spring.

“Recipients are awarded a plaque. Their names will also appear on a plaque that is on display at the office of the college dean and they will receive recognition in spring commencement ceremonies. Later in the spring, they will have a reception given in their honor,” Whitlatch said.

Professors who are nominated are responsible for providing a curriculum vita and evidence of outstanding performance such as student evaluations, peer reviews or evidence of the accomplishments of students who have benefited from the nominee’s skills.
