Health Center puts on condom day

Sacramento State celebrated its sixth-annual National Condom Day Wednesday in the Library fountain square.

The fact that day happened to fall on Valentine’s Day was no coincidence either, said senior pre-nursing major Teresa Hibbard who works with Sac State’s Student Health Services.

It’s very appropriate that Condom Day, also known as Sexual Responsibility Week, falls on Valentine’s Day, Hibbard said.

“Everyone thinks they know about doing it,” Hibbard said. “But you’d be surprised how many people don’t know.”

The event was sponsored Health Services.

Students were encouraged to stop by and receive free sample packages of contraceptives and brochures. While there, students could participate in the “condom test.”

Participants in the test are required to put a pair of goggles that “simulate” the effects of being drunk. With the goggles on, the participants then have to place a condom on the top of a bottle they are holding between their legs.

And nothing says “I love you” more than a rose made completely out of packages of condoms. The roses were for sale at $1 apiece. The proceeds will go to peer education programs of the Health Center.

Plenty of Health Services staff were on hand to answer questions and offer any kind of information for those curious.

The staff offered information on issues such as Family PACT.

The Family PACT program provides clinical services for family planning reproductive health to qualified low-income California residences at no cost. The Health Center is available to all Sac State students with services for pharmaceuticals, acute medical care, laboratory work, sexually transmitted infection counseling and other sexually related issues.

Students under the age of 19 need to show proof of immunity to the Hepatitis B virus.

All information submitted by patients is held in complete confidence as well as any records.

The Health Center is located off of State University Dr. across the street from Yosemite Hall.
