Women’s soccer take down Saint Mary’s in overtime

After being frustrated against Nevada on Sunday, a game in which the Hornets dominated throughout, it was finally the Hornets’ time to celebrate on Tuesday.

For the second straight game the Sacramento State women’s soccer team had chance after chance to put one away. It took until two minutes and change into the second overtime, but the Hornets finally banged one home off the foot of junior forward Kayelyn Satkowski to win 1-0 over Saint Mary’s.

Satkowski took a pass from fellow forward Katie McCoy and smashed one in near post on the right side past Gaels goalkeeper Noelle Brown. With 7:40 reading on the clock in the final OT period Satkowski was mobbed by teammates after her successful shot.

“I just saw that the right flank was open and I saw the near post was clear,” Satkowski said.

Satkowski had beaten her defender on the right side all day long leading to the game-ending play. “I think she’s the fastest player in the conference,” said assistant coach Randy Dedini. “I haven’t seen anybody faster.”

On several occasions the ball was played to Satkowski’s side when she was further away from the ball than her defender and she routinely outran the defender to set up scoring opportunities.

The game was quite literally inches away from never entering overtime at all. In the 80th minute Hornets defender Tiffany Fraser popped a spinning shot from the top of the box that hit off the crossbar. McCoy then followed the shot in front of the net and scored, but the score was denied because McCoy was offside.

Head coach Katie Poynter was noticeably giddy at the game’s conclusion. “It means the world to beat Saint Mary’s. They are a really good team in one of the best conferences in the country,” said Poynter.

Despite playing more than 190 scoreless minutes to start the season, Poynter is greatly encouraged by the team’s play so far. “I told the team before the first overtime that the team who has the composure will win and today it was us.”

The Hornets got excellent contributions from the talented freshman corps for the second straight game.

Midfielder Katie Rorabaugh again played stifling defense, while forward Kim Kemper was all over the field, nearly scoring on several occasions. Kemper finished the game with five shots, four of them on goal. Twice in two games Kemper has fired a shot that missed the mark by inches. Tuesday she hit one that danced on the goal line before being cleared by a Gaels defender.

Newcomer Mandy Trojan played the entire game in goal, marking the first time in Jenny Lawrence’s career that she didn’t start in the net. Trojan made four saves in the game. Midfielder Beverly Goebel also played impressively in her time on the field.

Sac State evened its record at 1-1 on the season, while Saint Mary’s fell back to 1-1 with the loss.

The Hornets out-shot the Gaels 22 to eight and were led by Satkowski’s six. Sac State next faces Causeway nemesis UC Davis at home on Sunday, Sept. 3 at noon.
