Mustangs drive off into sunset

A group of car thieves struck Sacramento State on Thursday, stealing three Ford Mustangs, police said.

Every once in a while, there will be a group that specializes in stealing one type of vehicle, said Lt. Dan Davis of the University Police Department. He said Thursday’s thefts appear to be a pattern.

A blue 1990 Mustang was stolen from one of the parking structures and a primer gray 1967 Mustang was stolen from Parking Lot 7, according to the campus police log.

Pat Jennings, a junior majoring in finance, said his 1993 teal green Mustang was also stolen while on campus.

Jennings said his car was parked next to a fence near Parking Structure II and was “kind of secluded.” He didn’t have any anti-theft devices or an alarm on the car.He said he thinks there was an organized group stealing the cars because there was no sign of a broken window.

“I could probably break into it with a Slim Jim if I had one, it’s not rocket science,” Jennings said.

When Jennings realized his car was stolen, he contacted police to file a report.

Jennings had not heard anything about his car as of Monday. He assumes it has already been scrapped for parts.

Police said the thefts occurred between 7 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. and that they have no leads or suspects, Davis said.

Sac State has anywhere from one to five officers on patrol at any given time: Lt. Davis suggested that drivers purchase anti-theft devices and not park in secluded areas.

He also said people should look into stolen vehicle recovery systems such as LoJack.
