Things could not be going much better for the Sacramento State Women’s soccer team these days.

The Hornets (5-6-3, 2-0-1) used a frenetic comeback in the final minutes of regulation to tie things up with the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona (6-9-0, 2-1-0), before scoring again in overtime to win 2-1.

The game started with a flurry of action from Northern Arizona. Just two minutes into the game Lumberjacks forward CeeCee Oderfor scored a goal, but it was called back because of an offsides call. In the 14th minute, however, the Lumberjacks made one count. Oderfor fired a shot that deflected off of a Hornets defender right to forward Stefanie Smith who kicked it past Sac State goalie Jenny Lawrence. Both Oderfor and midfielder Kaitlyn Baum were credited with assists on the play. Despite out-shooting Northern Arizona by a total of six to five in the opening half the Hornets went into halftime trailing 1-0.

After numerous close calls and near goals for the Hornets, Kayelyn Satkowski decided enough was enough. In the 86th minute Satkowski let fly a shot from the right side that deflected off of a Lumberjack defender, over the head of goalie Darin Kleinsmith to tie the game at 1-1.

“It’s the most amazing feeling I think I’ve ever had,” Satkowski said. “It feels so good.”

With just over a minute remaining Satkowski almost ended the game in regulation with another shot from the right. This one was saved by Kleinsmith to save the game for the Lumberjacks. Regulation ended with the score tied at one.

Sac State took the only two shots in overtime, the second of which ended the game. In the seventh minute of overtime Hornets forward Katie McCoy crossed a ball into the box where the feet of forward Kelly Novak were waiting. Novak banged it home to give the Hornets a 2-1 victory that propelled Sac State into first place in the Big Sky conference. McCoy was credited with the assist.

Novak was mobbed by the team at the top of the box after her goal. “This is the best feeling of my life,” Novak said. “To do this in the biggest game of the season, it’s just the best.”

It was not all good news for Novak on the day. Earlier in the game Novak took a fall and injured her right elbow. She bears a red bump on her arm the size of a baseball which Novak fears may be a fractured elbow.

Both Satkowski and Novak scored their second goals of the season in the win. Lawrence was credited with making four saves, but she came up huge in many other situations. When asked what was going through her mind when Novak found the net in overtime Lawrence said, “I could have cried if I wasn’t so out of breath from running down the field when she scored.”

Sac State out-shot Northern Arizona by a total of 16-11 in the game. The win moves Sac State to first place in the Big Sky conference, a spot that just two hours earlier was occupied by Northern Arizona. Lawrence put the win in perspective after the game. “This is maybe the biggest win in Sac State (women’s) soccer history.”

Sac State’s next game is on Friday at Hornet Soccer Field when they take on Cal State-East Bay at 1:30 p.m.
