CD Review: Trapt comes back ‘strong’ with second album

Vincent Gesuele

Trapt returns with “Someone in Control” and continues to take advantage of the success of its self-titled 2002 debut. “Headstrong” helped the band go platinum, capitalizing on the band’s prototypical Southern California metal sound that has made bands like Linkin Park, Papa Roach, and Incubus successful.

The new album is filled with much of the same style of music, which fortunately for them, works. It is evident in the first song, “Disconnected,” that the band relies on internal frustrations to fuel the fire in its lyrics. This continues through songs like “Lost Realist” and “Bleed Like Me.”

While the album is lyrically sound, the music is a bit predictable. This is nothing to worry about considering that most bands have become very predictable in their music these days. It is the lyrics that allow this album to stand out.

Trapt avoids the sophomore jinx by expanding on its initial success by creating an album that is refreshingly similar, but somewhat different.
