Things started out well enough, but the Dons of San Francisco proved to be way too much for the Hornets in the second half on Tuesday night as they won 89-64 in the Nest.

Sacramento State led by seven at the half (34-27), thanks to an 11-3 run that began with an Alonzo Young dunk after the Dons took a 24-23 lead.

In the second half it was all Dons all the time. They began the half with a 23-0 run, effectively ending the night for the Hornets. Sac State got within eight at 52-44, but couldn’t get over the hump.

San Francisco shot 22-28 in the second half from the field for an unbelievable 79 percent. They also outscored the Hornets 62-30 behind chants from 50 or so San Francisco fans who made the trip up to the game.

As the game got out of hand the fans were heard melodically chanting “this is our house” in front of the stunned Sac State crowd.

All five Dons starters finished in double figures, led by Alan Wiggins’ 21 points and 13 rebounds. Sac State was led by senior forward Alex Bausley who finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

The Hornets killed themselves at the free throw line, going 5-19 for the game.

“We’re going to grow from this,” head coach Jerome Jenkins said. “I’ll say it for the whole world to hear, I let us get embarrassed.”

After a blowout 34-point win over NAIA Bethany University to start the season the Hornets have now lost by 32 to New Mexico and 25 to San Francisco.

Sac State takes on the University of Denver at 7:05 p.m. on Friday in Denver.
