Most of us are over 18 years of age, we can smoke, vote and go to most casinos. We are adults who can make our own decisions- So why is it that going to an adult store can seem immoral or awkward for some of us?

It might be considered tasteless and tacky, but it is legal. I can’t speak for everyone, but I can speak for myself. I’m definitely an open person; I’ll pretty much say anything, go anywhere and always try to have fun in every situation. But going to adult shops like Suzie’s or Kiss n’ Tell just feels iniquitous.

Don’t get me wrong, whatever floats your boat is great! Some people need places to buy their goodies.

My first experience at an adult store was a couple years ago. My close girlfriend and I went to Kiss n’ Tell; she was having a party and wanted some decorations and funny favors to pass out.

As I drove up, I found myself not wanting to park in front, for the fear that I didn’t want anyone to recognize my car. Even now, years later and being a columnist who writes about things of this nature, I still find it demoralizing.

I walked in to meet her. It was exciting, but I still had the feeling that even though I was old enough to be in an adult store, I shouldn’t be allowed to see such naughty and vulgar things.

We walked around looking at gifts, raunchy lingerie, “nine inch” toys, movies- we giggled and kept it entertaining. Yet when I stopped to think about the reality of it, that eighteen-year-olds could walk into this environment with 50-year-olds, I started to feel a little disturbed.

It’s known in an environment such as this you should keep your eyes to yourself, but who really does that!? As I tried to rush my friend, paying more attention to my surroundings, I started noticing the men and woman shopping around me. Even women my mother’s age were buying things I don’t even want to think about, almost enough to make me gag.

I go once in a while to buy fun things for parties, personal preference or Halloween; but every time I go I can’t wait to walk right back out.

I know its OK to be there for what ever my reason may be, since I’m old and mature enough. I guess I just prefer to keep my activities and sexual things private, not laid out for the person in line behind me to know what makes my cat meow.

I have decided, when I need party favors, Spencer’s and party shops will have to do the trick. As for other things, I will just have to make due until the next passion party with my girlfriends. On the other hand, if you like Adult Stores, great for you! And if you haven’t visited one before, just know when your first time comes around it will be an experience all in its own
