Ball hog diaries: Third Journal

Editor’s Note: Sac State student Kevin Lemieux is hitting the hardwood this spring as an intramural basketball player. He is playing for the Duke Blue Devils, and each week he will be sharing his journal with The State Hornet. Third journalHip hip! Hooray! We got our first win this week! Unfortunately, it didn’t come on Monday night. We played team Staff Infection, truly a great team name. They came into the game undefeated and No. 2 in the league power rankings out of 60 teams, and we came in ranked No. 44.

I wanted to win this game really bad because Staff Infection’s roster includes Rec Sports Coordinator Ken Morton (6-foot-8), men’s basketball coaches Dwayne Canada and Lorenzo Watkins, as well as former Hornets James Payne and Joseth Dawson. We put a little bit of a scare into them, taking the lead 36-30 with nine minutes remaining in the second half. However, the point guard on our team decided that would be a good time to start talking trash, which consequently led to an anger-driven 34-8 run that would blow us out of the water.

Wednesday’s game was kind of a joke. It was the match up of 0-4 teams. We won big time, 69-42. It was nice to get the first win of the year. But during the game, I came up with a fantastic idea.

Let me preface this by saying that I think the referees for the most part do a great job, especially considering all the crap they take from hack ballers like me. But, I have been trying my hardest to get a charge called in this league for the past three years. Granted, I don’t have the swiftest of feet to get in position to take a charge, but I know when my feet are set. It seems like every time I try to take a charge I just get a blocking foul called on me. I was about to give up hope, but I’m going on a crusade.

Although I’m not so sure that all the referees at these games know what a charge is, I’m going to attempt to take at least one charge per game for the rest of the year until I get one called. I’ll keep you all updated on a game by game basis during my endeavor.
