Sac State softball drops painful double header to Spartans

Sacramento State pitcher Brianne Ferguson suffered her first — and likely only — loss to her former team Saturday afternoon as she was beaten 1-0 by San Jose State.

The senior ace went the distance in game one of a double header at Shea Stadium today, allowing just an unearned run, but ultimately becoming a victim of her defense and former teammate Carol Forbes’ one-hit shutout gem.

“You can’t win ’em all,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson, who transferred from San Jose State in 2002 after she said she was mistreated by coach Dee Dee Enabenter-Omidiji, was seen teary-eyed after the loss and said she was mainly feeling nerves before the game.

“I was sick like I thought I would be,” Ferguson said.

The only run of the game came in the top of the sixth inning when Hornet second baseman Gloria Toledo let a ground ball slip under her glove allowing Spartan first baseman Lindsey Allen to reach base.

Jana Arde followed with a triple to right field to drive Allen in.

From there Forbes set down the final six Hornets in order to notch her ninth win of the season.

In the nightcap San Jose State completed the sweep with a 4-3 extra innings victory.

The teams played to a 3-3 tie after the Hornets got a run in the bottom of the seventh on an Amy Hillel single which scored shortstop Amy Tompkins.

After a scoreless eighth inning, San Jose State got a run in the top of the ninth on a Nikki Cinque wild pitch to take the lead.

Tompkins sacrificed Jess Rojo, who was placed on second base under the international tiebreaker, to third but leadoff hitter Hilary Johnson and left fielder Lesley Mayhorn couldn’t get Rojo the final 60 feet to pay dirt.

The two losses were the first home losses for the Hornets this year.
