TONIGHT: Gymnastics hosts rival San Jose State

In the first meet of a home-and-home series, the Sacramento State gymnastics team fell to San Jose State, who came to this meet with a perfect start of 2-0.

Hornet senior Stephanie Aeder, who qualified for the NCAA West Regionals on the floor, won her third floor title of the season with a score of 9.85.

Freshman Alexis Tsurumoto landed the bars title, also for the third time this season, scoring a 9.800. Senior teammate Nirvana Zaher won the vault with a solid score of 9.75.

Despite the individual titles Sac State was unable to pick up the second half of the routines to pick-up a win.

After leading in the first two rotations of bars and vault, the Hornets had to face their potentially weakest event as a team, the beam — the only event in which they do not rank first in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Freshman Melissa Genovese was unable to take first in the beam from San Jose State’s strongest athlete, Greta Leach who scored a 9.725. Leach also won the all around competition.

The meet ended with San Jose winning 191.950-189.500.

The two schools have staged a heated rivalry in the local gymnastics world. Since the MPSF began three seasons ago, the Spartans and the Hornets have been the two best teams the conference.

Sac State won the first two MPSF crowns with San Jose State edging the Hornets last year by little over four tenths of a point in San Jose.

The two teams complete the home-and-home Friday at 7 p.m. in the Hornets Nest.
