It’s raining it’s pouring

When it rains — for the Hornets at least — it sure does pour.

Sac State lost its fifth game in a row on Saturday in a rainout to the St. Mary’s Gaels by a score of 8-1.

The game went seven full innings, but had to be called due to heavy rain; after the completion of the top of the fifth inning the game became official.

Things got off on the wrong foot for the Hornets, when in just the first inning, the Gaels struck first.

Sam Carter knocked in a run with an RBI ground out, giving St. Mary’s the first run of the game. Hornet second baseman Pedro Santiago’s error allowed the second run of the inning to score, giving the Gaels a 2-0 lead.

Sac State came right back, however, in the bottom of the first.

Santiago atoned for his error by smoking a line drive up the middle, scoring shortstop Everet Rincon, giving the Hornets their only run of the game.

Orben Frederick gave St. Mary’s a 3-1 lead with an RBI infield single, one of many for the Gaels on the day.

In the sixth inning, Preston Young crushed a home run to deep right-center to put St. Mary’s up 4-1. Adam Thompson added another run with a bunt single, which was followed by Carter’s two-run infield single that almost wasn’t. Rincon made a diving stop for the ball, but Carter was safe at first, and two runners came home. Frederick added another RBI with a double to cap the Gael scoring for the inning.

Hornet starter Ethan Katz was roughed up for his second start in a row, going five innings, giving up five earned runs on seven hits, with two walks and seven strike outs.

The game was cancelled as the eighth inning got under way due to increasing rain, which had been intermittent throughout the day.

Sunday’s double-header between the Gaels and the Hornets was postponed and there is no set make-up date as of yet.

The next game at home for the Hornets will be played on Feb. 22 against Nevada at 2 p.m.
