Recent history not on Hornet’s side

Fresh off the emotional devastation of the Ben-Jennifer wedding that wasn’t, fans shouldn’t be discouraged.

This is a time for celebration.

Dysfunctional and long lasting like “Married With Children’s” Al and Peggy Bundy, the Sacramento State Hornets and the UC Davis Aggies will be celebrating 50 years of jointed bliss this Saturday at Hornet Stadium.

The Causeway Classic, which didn’t receive its official name until 1984, is named after the section of Interstate 80 that connects downtown Sacramento with Davis over the Yolo County flood control bypass.

In the last few years Davis has flooded Sacramento — with points that is.Recent history has not been kind to the Hornets, who have lost five out of the last six Causeway meetings.

Last year the Aggies jumped out to a 17-0 lead before Sac State responded by scoring a touchdown at the end of the first half. UC Davis went on to win 38-21, led by Matt Massari who rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown.

Sac State last beat UC Davis in 1999, 48-27, led by the play of then junior quarterback Ricky Ray who threw for 377 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Charles Roberts also showed his greatness by rushing for 211 yards and one touchdown.

Roberts broke the all-time NCAA Division 1-AA rushing record at the 2000 Causeway, passing Jerry Azumah.

Despite his 118 rushing yards on the night, the Hornets fell to the Aggies 13-10.But 2001 was the biggest disappointment for the Hornets. Freshman quarterback Ryan Leadingham and the Hornets turned the ball over five times, three on Leadingham fumbles, in a 43-0 loss.

This year’s Causeway Classic will be televised for the first time since 1999.Last year Sac State was coming into the game following a 32-24 loss to Idaho State. This season they come in following a 47-21 victory over the Bengals.Sac State’s largest victory came in 1991 when the Hornets won 50-18. UC Davis had their largest victory in 1982, winning 51-6.

Sac State’s longest string of victories in the Causeway is four, from 1988-91. Before 1988, UC Davis had won the previous 18 games, spanning from 1970-87.
