Gross could continue to most major rushing yardage at Cal Poly
After destroying Saint Mary’s 69-19 on Saturday, the Sacramento State Hornets (1-1) head to San Luis Obispo this weekend to take on the Cal Poly Mustangs (1-0).
Last season the Hornets defeated Cal Poly 27-17 at Hornet Stadium. Hornet running back Garret White rushed for a career-high 183 yards and this years starter Tyronne Gross had a 2-yard touchdown run.
Sac State quarterback Ryan Leadingham threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns and wide receiver Fred Amey caught five passes for 139 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown.
With Garret White gone Cal Poly should get a heavy dose of Gross to help keep the Hornet offense balanced and the Mustangs’ defense on it’s heels.
On the defensive side of the ball the Hornets will have their hands full trying to contain Mustang quarterback Chris Peterson who was a one man wrecking-crew last week in Cal Poly’s upset over UTEP.
Linebacker Ryan Kroeker, after sitting out the first quarter of last week’s big win for disciplinary reasons, should start on the road against the Mustangs.
Peterson leads Mustangs after 34-14 upset over UTEP
Cal Poly enters this weekend’s match up against Sacramento State with a with a feather in its cap.
The Division 1-AA Mustangs were victorious over UTEP, a Div 1 A program, 34-14 at El-Paso.
Senior quarterback Chris Peterson engineered a Cal Poly offense that produced 451 total yards against UTEP. Peterson completed 14-of-23 passes for 281 yards with two touchdowns, and rushed 23 times for 77 yards and one touchdown.
Wide receivers Jonah Russell and Darrel Jones were Peterson’s go-to-guys. Russell had three catches for 100 yards with a 60-yard touchdown. Jones scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass and finished the game with a team-high four receptions for 54 yards.
In their home opener versus Sac State, the Mustangs will have to bring the same intensity and execution.
Linebacker Bert Schenone who had two sacks, a forced fumble and an interception last week will attempt to reproduce these numbers against the potent Hornet passing attack featuring junior quarterback Ryan Leadingham and receivers Fred Amey, Billy White and Kenan Smith.
