Couples put their love to the test in ‘The Nearly Wed Game’
February 12, 2003
To prepare for Valentine’s Day, Sacramento State and UNIQUE presents the “Nearly Wed Game” today in the University Union. If you have been romantically linked to someone for a while, this is your chance to show how well you know your mate.
All you singles need not worry – the game will blow away your loneliness and make you double over in laughter. Couples who think they know their mate might end up fighting each other after all is said and done.
The Union Network for Innovative Quality University Entertainment (UNIQUE) will be sponsoring the contest. This Nearly-Wed Game comes from last year’s Dating Game, which helped to bring some couples together.
The game is simple. Couples will be separated and four identical questions will be given to the men and women. Their answers will be written on poster boards and returned to the panelists before their mates come on stage. Contestants will not see the answers until all panelists answer the questions. Couples with matching answers will earn points.
Before the game, the couples also guess their total scores. The couple that earns the closest points of guessed scores will get bonus points at the end. Naturally, the winner of the game will get a prize.
Sounds easy, right? Wrong. Most couples from games before did not match their answers well. Questions like, “How many boyfriends did your girlfriend have?” and “Where did you kiss your mate first?” will be asked.
There are some helpful tips if you want to play. Tip one: dress nicely. Girls, be careful when wearing a mini skirt because the stage is pretty high. Tip two: show up by 11:30 a.m. at the University Union’s Redwood room to prepare for the game. Tip three: don’t worry and just relax. Emcee Del Van Dyke, who was named best comedian in Sacramento by “Best in Sacramento,” will help make you feel good and comfortable on stage.
Van Dyke began performing comedy after graduating from college, essentially working every club that had a microphone in San Francisco. After winning several comedy competitions, he began headlining for major nightclubs on the West Coast. He will introduce the couples with synopses of their relationships.”We offer a wide variety of entertainment to get people together,” says UNIQUE event coordinator Dean Sorensen. “It’s free. Everybody can enjoy the show.”
