Health Center offers free services to students
September 17, 2002
The Health Center can cure most common ailments for free, according to Laurie Bissett, director of Health Education.
The Health Center offers services such as X-raying, Chlamydia testing, physicals, optometry exams, laboratory tests, immunizations and HIV testing among others.
The Health Center offers about 90 percent of its services for free because a portion of student fees goes to the Health Center, said Grady.
The Health Center serves approximately 175 people daily.Senior Vincent Pascual uses the Health Center?s services because his regular health care insurance expired.
“Not having outside health insurance isn?t a big worry anymore because I know I can go to the Health Center for basic treatment when I need it,” Pascual said.
Students can also take advantage of the pharmacy to fill their outside prescriptions and obtain new prescriptions. In some cases, prescriptions can be cheaper at the Health Center than at other pharmacies.
The Health Center handles the more common ailments such as colds, the flu, upper respiratory infections, sexual health problems and immunizations, Grady said.
For emergencies, 911 should be called as the Health Center is not as easily equipped to handle emergencies.
Students who paid for the augmented health plan will receive free physical exams and X-rays, opposed to the standard $35 fee for physicals and $15 fee for X-rays.
