Candidates from the Associated Students, Inc. election met with the elections complaint committee Tuesday to discuss further actions on five grievances.

“The purpose of the committee is to hear the evidence and make a decision on claims of unfair advantages that were made by certain candidates,” committee chair Kevin Greene said. “To disqualify a candidate completely, the candidate would have to show severe violation of the election code.”

The committee allowed each case to be heard in a two and three minute format, as well as having witnesses testify on behalf of each complainant.

“It would have to be proven that the complainant influenced the voters significantly,” Greene said.

Committee members first heard testimony from Howard Story?s Voice slate and Tom Hughes vs. Eric Guerra and the 180 slate regarding accusations of slanderous allegations, unauthorized use of food products and misrepresentation.

Hughes filed the second hearing against Guerra and the 180 slate for exceeding campaign expenditure limits.

The final hearing dealt with unfair and illegal logos used by the 180 slate, filed against Peter Ucovich by JJ Hurley.

The committee assembled twice Tuesday, for a total of approximately six hours.

The elections complaint committee consists of faculty member Ernest Uwazie, Assistant Director for Housing and Residential Life Jane Heaton, students-at-large Jessalyn Fuentes and Greene, who served as chairman.

The committee has five days after the hearing date to set forth a reccommendation, which will then be reviewed by Vice President of Student Affairs Shirley Uplinger and ASI Executive Director Pat Worley, according to the ASI Election Code.
