ASI Elections 2002
April 24, 2002
Student supporters, candidates and parents were present as the 180 slate won three out of four executive positions in the 2002 Associated Students, Inc. elections, led by Eric Guerra for president.
The Go Hornets spirit measure failed, as well as the change in bylaws that would have increased the number of directors for undeclared and postbaccalaureate. The Go Hornets spirit measure would have increased student fees by $5 per semester, pumping approximately $300,000 per year into the Sacramento State Cheer Squad, Xtreme Dance Team and Marching Band.
Luke Wood from the Voice slate won the position of executive vice president, while the 180 slate took the remaining executive positions: Peter Ucovich for vice president of finance and Crystal Chase, for vice president of university affairs.
“This is the toughest thing I ever did,” Guerra said. “All of my candidates were overqualified, but they helped create this opportunity for me.”
President-elect Guerra came through with 49 percent, followed by Howard Story with a 33 percent voter turnout. Tom Hughes came through with 17 percent.
The spirit measure failed at 61 percent, while only 38 percent of voters agreed to the fee hike. The ASI bylaw change also failed by 37 percent.
A night of cheers, noisemakers and tears culminated in the traditional dash to the Library Quad fountain, where the winners continued to celebrate.
The position for ASI Director of Arts and Letters went to Christina Gutierrez. The Director of Business will be Jennifer Plescia, and the Director of Education position went to Michelle Pereira. The Director of Engineering and Computer Sciences will be Fahnmusa Jangaba and the Director of Health and Human Services will be Patrice Hill. Director of Social Science and Interdisciplinary Studies is Christina Andrade and the Director of Undeclared is Jessica Owen. The position for Postbaccalaureate Director went to Mohamed Hamada and University Union board positions went to Luke Wood and Molly Slayter.
The new administration will take office June 1.
