Women learn to fight back
October 23, 2001
When was the last time you saw a mother teaching her daughter how to hit and scream?
Today at noon in the University Union Ballroom, women will be taught self-defense methods to protect themselves. UNIQUE Programs and Associated Students, Inc. Cultural Affairs are joining forces with Women Escaping a Violent Environment to educate women in self-protection.
Midge Marino, founder and instructor of the self-defense course at Sacramento State, presents this free event. Everyone is encouraged to attend and participate regardless of age, gender or physical conditioning. The presentation will demonstrate basic and common sense skills involved in fighting off an attacker.
According to Jessica Higgins, community educator for WEAVE, 65 percent of women who fight back against their attackers escape, which should give hope and inspiration to women everywhere.
“It helps women gain confidence in being able to take care of themselves,” Higgins said. “It lets them know that they have the power to fight back, and that an attack is never their fault.”
Information regarding a preview self-defense course that will be offered on campus by Marino Nov. 19 from 5-8 p.m. will also be available at the presentation. This course will be open to Sac State students, faculty and staff.
