That new ?Car? smell

Justin Hoeger

Quirky pop band They Might Be Giants? new release, “Mink Car,” is their first album of new material in five years and is a welcomed return. The idiosyncratic Brooklyn-based duo of John Flansburgh and John Linnell have, with the help of a horde of collaborators and backup musicians, crafted another album full of catchy songs and often-bizarre lyrics.

The songs? musical tones range from the mock-1980s synth-pop of “Man, It?s So Loud In Here” and the bar song feel of “Drink!” to the sweetly low-key “Another First Kiss” and the peppy “Yeh Yeh.”

In keeping with their earlier work, the album?s lyrics swing between the fairly normal and the truly strange. The upbeat first track, “Bangs,” is all about an obsession with a girlfriend?s hairstyle: “I?m only holding your hand/ so I can look at your bangs,” Linnell sings; while “Hovering Sombrero” is entirely about a flying hat and all that passes it by.

The Giants are one of the most consistently memorable pop bands around, and after nearly 20 years they?ve honed their songwriting skills to a sharp edge. Longtime fans will enjoy the album, and the uninitiated should find something to like.
