Live makes five

Alternative rock mainstay Live has released “V,” their fifth album of spirituality-infused music. Since their debut album, 1991?s “Mental Jewelry,” and the major success of 1994?s “Throwing Copper,” Live has consistently released quality work, and this album is no exception.

As in their previous albums, Live?s singer and guitarist Ed Kowalczyk mixes Eastern and Western philosophies into his lyrics, tending toward entreaties for peace, love and tolerance.

Standout songs include the energetic first single, “Simple Creed,” which features British trip-hopper Tricky, the up-tempo and determined “Like a Soldier,” and the ballad “Nobody Knows.”

While at times overwrought and preachy, the songs carry a deeper message than the pathetic, angsty self-pity of much contemporary rock, and the solid musical compositions make up for any lyrical lack.

With this album, Live has further cemented their veteran position in modern rock, and after 10 years their songwriting talents have been well honed. This album won?t disappoint the long-time fan or the recent convert.
