Let them hear Cake

Here?s a bit of irony for the music industry: Cake hasn?t drastically changed over the years. With “Comfort Eagle,” the Sacramento-based band?s fourth album, they?ve stuck to what they know best ? catchy lyrics, even catchier beats, and some of the best trumpet add-ins this side of the Brian Setzer Orchestra.

If you thought that by changing labels, from BMG to Columbia Records, that Cake?s sound would inevitably change, you?re mistaken. The band may have matured, what with four albums now under their belt, but front-man John McCrea continues to poke fun at the usual?everything from aristocracy to religion, with lyrics still likely to make you raise an eyebrow or two.

The first single off the album, “Short Skirt/Long Jacket,” is about as definitive of Cake?s overall style of lyrics as you can get. It?s upbeat and has, yet again, great trumpet stylings from Vince DiFiore.

Cake has successfully retained their uniqueness with “Comfort Eagle.” Who else can dedicate over four solid minutes to describing the life of an opera singer and make it sound good?really good, in fact?

Some of the lyrics might not make perfect sense, but that?s the fun of it, especially for a new listener. The album, like the previous three, is by far worth your time and money.
