Hornets drop two against Northridge

The Hornets lost both games of their double header on April 7 against Cal State Northridge as the two contests were almost mirror images of each other.

The first game was won by Northridge (21-19) in the 8th inning as they used some clutch hitting to put themselves up for good 3-1. Designated hitter Summer Richardson’s two-run shot in the 8th inning sealed the deal for Northridge on a day when both team’s struggled at the plate.

For the game, the Hornets (14-23) scattered six hits and left four runners on base. Senior Andrea Becker’s base hit scored junior Lori Meixner, which accounted for their only run.The Hornets’ inability to cross home plate spoiled a good outing by sophomore Jillian Bivert.

” Jillian did a good job of keeping us in the game,” head Coach Kathy Strahan said. The second game of the double-header took on the personality of the first one, as Northridge again got some clutch hitting in the 8th inning to seize a 2-0 victory.

Like the first game, a strong pitching performance was spoiled. Freshman Nicole Deatherage gave up two runs in eight innings of work. At one stretch during the game, she went five innings without giving up a hit.

Her performance paled in comparison though to the outing by Northridge’s Sarah Farnsworth, who allowed two hits on the afternoon.

“We had a lot of trouble hitting her; she kept everyone off balance,” said Strahan who felt Farnsworth was the difference in the game. “She has a really nice screwball.”

The Hornets suffered a key injury late in the game as Andrea Becker suffered a first degree shoulder separation while colliding with a teammate in an effort to track down a fly ball.
