Track and field has several top-five finishers at Cal Poly Invitational

Sac State’s track and field team put forth a solid performance inSaturday’s Cal Poly Invitational at the San Luis Obispo campus.

But the Hornets had nothing to show for their overall efforts, sinceteam scores were not accounted for. Still, Sac State proved that itbelonged with the rest of the field, which included BYU, University ofNevada, Utah State, Fresno State, UC Irvine, Montana State, and CalPoly.

In all, Sac State racked up 30 top-10 finishes, 18 of them in the topfive.

“It was definitely a good meet for us, no question,” Sac State coach JoeNeff said. “The marks were not as good as last week (in the BruceDrummond Invitational), but I’m still real pleased. We competed againstsome great competition. I would have loved to see team scores, though.”

Juniors Charles Amey and Rokeem Osby were the lone Sac State maleathletes that earned qualifying Big Sky Conference Championship marks.Amey clocked in at 15.01 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles and tookfifth place. Osby placed fourth in the high jump, where he leaped sixfeet, 10 inches.

Sandra Butler and Monica Crawford, both sophomores, have advanced to theconference finals after qualifying in their respective events onSaturday. Butler, who was a half-inch off the Big Sky standard in thehigh jump last weekend, jumped five feet, six inches for fourth place.Crawford was sixth in the shot put after tossing a 44-09.75 measurement.

Also qualifying, Jennifer Burkhalter, a transfer from Mt. Sac communitycollege, ran a 56.58 in the 400 and ended up in third.

“We use meets like these to refine technical things, especially in thefield events,” Neff said. “There is not one senior on our men’s’ teamand the vast majority of the women’s team are freshman or sophomores. Asyou can see, we don’t have a whole lot of experience, so we’re learningsome new things every week.”

Shanita Bryant provided the Hornets’ top all-around performance. She outsprinted the field in the 100 and improved her qualifying mark by atenth of a second (11.96). The freshman also took second in the longjump (19-02.75) and fifth in the 200 (24.84).

Senior jumper Karen Trapini placed third in the triple jump (38-09.75)and fourth in the long jump (18-06.75).

Renee Warner and Myseha Kirtman went one and two in the 100-meterhurdles with respective times of 14.16 and 14.27. Senior sprinter JoniDavid improved her conference mark by a tenth of a second in the 100(11.98), where she finished a step behind Bryant for second place.

On the men’s team, Hornet freshman Shawn Hooper topped his season-bestmark in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a 54.58 qualifying time.

Kenan Smith came in third in the 400 at 49.25 and Jacob Mills finishedfifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase at 9:31.23. Lloyd Jackson was fifthin the 100 with an 11.12 mark. The three times were not Big Skyqualifiers, however.

Sac State’s relay teams all fared well, as the 4×100 and 4×400 women’steams placed second (46.95) and fourth (3:51.76). The men’s teamsfinished third (42.61) in the 4×100 and second in the mile relay(3:17.79).

Also finishing in the top-10 were: Tim McGaillian in the hammer throw(eighth, 151-05.25), Brandon Lynch in the javelin throw (sixth, 161-05),Tracy Dahl in the pole vault (10th, 11-03.75), Molly Peterson in the3,000 (seventh, 11:03.48), Ebony White in the 100-meter hurdles(seventh, 15.32), Brent Sims in the 400 (ninth, 50.39), Tina Limon inthe 1,500 (seventh, 4:44.32) and the 800 (10th, 2:21.00), Dustin Diaz inthe 1,500 (10th, 4:03.08), Jeremy Espino in the 100 (ninth, 11.42), andStephanie Byrd in 200 (ninth, 25.45) and the 100 (10th, 12.35).

This upcoming Saturday marks the second of three home meets for SacState. The Hornets will host Fullerton State, Fresno State and Big Skyrival Portland State in a four-way USTCA Series meet.

“We’re really looking forward to this weekend,” Neff said. “This is ourfirst time ever against Fullerton State and we get a chance to look atanother Big Sky team, Portland State. Plus, we’ve never beat FresnoState in track, so we’re gunning for them. We have a very good chance onthe women’s side, and the men?s side should be fairly close.”

The event will start at noon.
