Sac State teaching student arrested and shot by police

A Sacramento State Campus Police officer was involved in the shooting ofa Sac State instructor March 10.

The incident occurred at 7-Eleven on La Riviera Drive near Sac Statewhen Steven Yount, 38, was arrested for suspicion of driving under theinfluence.

According to an article in The Sacramento Bee, Yount was accidentallyshot once in the buttocks while officers were attempting to calm himdown after he had been arrested.Yount was shot by a Sacramento City police officer, not a Sac Stateofficer, said John Hamrick, public information officer for CampusPolice.

“Our officer was not the one whose weapon discharged,” Hamrick said.

Yount was transported to the hospital, where he was reported to be ingood condition.Yount graduated from Sac State in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree inPhysics and then received his master’s degree in Physics from theUniversity of California, Santa Barbara in 1995, according to FrankWhitlatch of University Affairs.

“He is currently a full-time student in the teacher credential program,”Whitlatch said. “This is his first semester teaching a two-unit Physicslab.”

However, the incident will have an effect on the Department.

“Because of his injury, he will not return this semester,” said RachelBrault, secretary in the Physics Department.

The Sacramento City Police Department has taken the lead investigationin the case, but Sac State is also conducting its own internalinvestigation, he said.

Campus Police and University Affairs officials declined to comment onthe status of the officer involved in the shooting.
