Sac State defeats Morehead State 2-1 for only victory

After losing the first of two games on Friday at the Capital Classic,the Hornets turned the tide in the nightcap against Morehead State,taking a 2-1 victory, and going into bracket play with a record of 1-4.

The game was dominated start to finish by Sac State’s starting pitcherJillian Bivert. The sophomore pitched a complete game with sevenstrikeouts, no walks and only two hits. Bivert, also a first baseman,helped her own cause by scoring the first run for the Hornets.”We had our pitching, defense and offense all in one game and it turnedinto a win,” Bivert said. “I told our team that we just needed tobelieve in ourselves and relax and have fun.”

After an hour relay, the Hornets were relaxed and they made quick workof the Eagles. They held them hitless through the first five innings andallowing only one hit in each of the final two innings.

Sac State’s offense managed only five hits, but the defense took overthe game and provided the stops they needed. The Hornets committed fiveerrors in the game but recovered from them to shut down the Eagles’offense. Jennifer Jokinen scored the Hornets’ second run and it provedall they needed for the win.

Head coach Kathy Strahan was proud of her team’s effort in the victory,the lone win in the tournament.

“We went out there and played basic softball,” she said. “We had fun andwe won.”
