NFL at Sac State

Two NFL teams sent representatives to evaluate the abilities of four members of last year?s Sacramento State football team. On Friday, five more teams will drop by campus to see the same players.

The four Hornets being looked at are quarterback Ricky Ray, running back Charles Roberts, receiver Lamont Webb and linebacker Anthony Daisley.

On Thursday, Cinncinnati Bengals Assistant Coach John Garrett, who specializes in quarterbacks and receivers, was at the Sac State practice field, mainly observing and testing Ricky Ray. Overall, the quarterback impressed Garrett.

“He was impressive, he?s a natural smooth athlete,” Garrett said. “He threw the ball with good balance and he is in good shape. He?s good enough to make every play an offense would need and he can exploit blitzes.”

Garrett believes that Ray will be given an opportunity to play in the NFL next year.”He was not nervous or excited (on Thursday) like some guys,” Garrett said. “He?s a guy that will definitely get a shot in an NFL camp and compete for a third string spot or a practice squad position.”

Ray, who was worked very hard in Thursday?s hot weather, took the workout in stride but also realized that it was a big opportunity.

“This isn?t do or die, it?s not my only avenue,” Ray said. “But I?m interviewing for a $200,000 (NFL minimum salary) job.”

During the drills that lasted about one minute, 15 seconds, Ray threw passes to ex-teammates Roberts and Webb, who were also being observed by Garrett, as well as three other Hornet receivers from past years.

“I came out and ran the routes like I was supposed to,” Webb said. “He (Garrett) told us to pretty much run the plays like we?re used to.”

On Friday morning Marty Barrett, a regional scout for the Chicago Bears, did numerous tests on the athletes, focusing mainly on Daisley, Roberts and Webb. Barrett, who has been with the Bears for four years, has been to Sac State before, including last year, when he scouted out Lonnie Paxton, Tim Conley and Jon Osterhout.

Among the tests that Barrett ran the players through were the long jump, bench press, and the 40-yard dash. Roberts ran a career best 4.5 in the 40-yard dash.

“I?m happy for the first workout, but I can get better,” Roberts said. “Basically, if you can do the drills with a fast pace, that is what they want to see.”

Webb, who ran track for Sac State until last year, also recorded a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash, but he was not pleased.

“Everything went cool except for that,” Webb said.

Daisley felt that his first NFL workout was decent, but he thinks that he can test a lot better than he did Friday.

“I tested average, but this is something I can practice now,” he said. “I?m going to have to improve for (Friday?s workouts).”
