Down to Earth brings down mix of old school, rap, and soul

In the movie, “Down to Earth,” Chris Rock plays a low-brow comic who was accidentally sent to heaven, but comes back to Earth in a rich man?s body. The soundtrack to the film brings a mix of music and classic music.

The first new song on the soundtrack is the single from Monica called “Just Another Girl.” This track brings a funky mix of dance beats to add to violin sounds in the background. Monica brings her soulful sounds to the song, and together could make this soundtrack a success. In the song, Monica explains that a woman wants a long-term relationship, not just “a name in your little black book” as she frequently repeats in her chorus lines.

The soundtrack also has two old-school tracks. The classic “Gin and Juice” by Snoop Dogg. This smash hit brings back old memories of when people could just lay back and have a drink. This track brings techno sounds with a funky beat that will keep people in the groove for more.

This song was also on Snoop Dogg’s smashing first album, “Doggystyle.” The other is none other than Lauryn Hill’s “Everything Is Everything.” The track brings a symphony sound that would mix in with beats that made Hill a success with her smash hit album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.”

The rest of the soundtrack provides brand new hip-hop and R&B music. The brand new track from rappers Sticky Fingaz and Eminem called “What If I Was White” keeps the culture alive and kicking. The track relates to Chris Rock?s character, who filters into the body of a rich white person after he is accidentally sent to heaven. Both rappers simultaneously discuss the issues of what it is like to be a white person.

Fingaz gives some powerful points of being white. Among them is refraining from using the “n” word, being careful of what the person says, or having an interracial relationship.

The soundtrack starts out with a very upbeat track from The Roots featuring Amel Larrieux (formerly of Groove Theory) called “Glitches.” This track combines jazz with powerful beats that gets the soundtrack going.

After Monica?s song, Ginuwine comes in with his new song, “Can You Tell It?s Me.” This sultry slow groove gives the theme of love in the movie, which it features Rock having his love interest, played by Regina King. The best part of this song is that it is true R&B with an upbeat sound that would be perfect for a love scene.

Added with Ginuwine?s X-rated lyrics, this overall, is one of most impressive songs in this soundtrack. This song could make a monster return for Ginuwine if he released it as a single for his new album coming out this spring.

Then the soundtrack continues its upbeat sound tour with the new group 3LW. The trio, which provided the hit “No More,” has a track called “Never Let Go.” In the single, the track continues to connect the theme of love and passion in the movie version. The harmonious sounds of 3LW once again provide maturity into their music.

Other artists on the 15-track album include Ruff Endz, Jagged Edge, and Bone Thugs N’ Harmony. One new group featured on the track is Son By Four. Their track “With You” gives an edgy performance with a mix of slow grooves and dance beats that would give recognition to their name. Last, but not least, Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child debuts her solo act with “Angel.”

This slow groove gives Rowland the opportunity to make a statement to the rest of the music industry proving that she can make it on her own with her powerful voice. The sounds and background give this song an emotional feel to this soundtrack, and could also give it an Oscar nomination at next year’s Academy Awards. Overall, this soundtrack is more upbeat than anticipated, but it provides listeners new material for returning artists who want to make a splash come this spring.
