February 21, 2001
Despite being forced to play indoors because of rain Sunday afternoon, the Sac State women?s tennis team was able to cruise to two wins to start off its season.
On Sunday, the Hornets cruised to an easy win over the University of San Francisco, 7-0, and they followed that performance Wednesday by downing Sonoma State, 5-2.
“They played real well today,” coach Bill Campbell said. “I think we should have a very good season.”
The Hornets won all six singles matches, clinching the victory before the doubles portion of the match was even played. The Hornets won two of the three doubles matches, allowing them to gain the point and record the shutout.
In singles play, the Hornets dominated every match, with the closest match being the number three singles contest between Janice Mota of Sac State and San Francisco?s Carey Savage. Mota took the match, 8-4.
Marta Gronowicz and Gabriella Lundqvist, playing in the number one and number two singles matches, were able to defeat their opponents by a score of 8-1. In the four, five, and sixth seed matches, Laila Karim, Italina Kirknus and Cindy Clark defeated San Francisco by scores of 8-2.In doubles play, Sac State won the number one and two doubles matches, enabling the Hornets to get the point and the sweep over San Francisco. The only loss for the Hornets came in the number three doubles match, where they lost 8-4.
Coach Campbell felt that the team “swept through the singles matches very easily.” He also stated that the team is much stronger in singles than doubles.
“We need to work on our doubles,” Campbell said. “We haven?t been practicing our doubles as much.”
On Wednesday, the Hornets hosted Sonoma State, winning 5-2. Sac State was able to win the top four singles and the top two doubles matches to defeat Sonoma State.
“They looked real good, we had two players out,” Campbell said of Caroline Svensson and Laila Karim.
Gronowicz led the Hornet attack with a win in the number one singles match. Gronowicz defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-1. Mota, Lundqvist, and Kirknus were the other three Hornets to win in singles play.
In doubles play, Gronowicz and Mota teamed up to defeat their opponents 8-1. In the other doubles win for the Hornets, Cindy Clark and Kirknus downed their opponents 8-5.
The next opponent for the Hornets will be Cal State Northridge on Saturday at Rio Del Oro. Campbell believes that this will be the “first real big test.”
“If we play to our abilities against Northridge, we will be fine,” Campbell said. “We will need to be healthy too.”
