February 6, 2001
The Peak Adventures Challenge Center continues to attempt to grow ? despite budget cuts. Students and staff have used this program for some time now at a relatively low cost. This spring, there will be a fee of $10 to use the programs that are up to two hours long.
Peak Adventures has been around for 10 years. Last fall, the program was free for the 900 participating students.Because of ASI funding cuts, Peak Adventures is now charging $10 for students who use its programs.
Holly Scott, program director, said some of the departments on campus that participate in popular Peak Adventures programs are Business, Communication Studies, and Recreation and Leisure departments.
“The staff at Peak Adventures prides themselves on encouraging the use of the programs to help build teamwork and leadership skills,” Scott said.
Some of the staff on campus find the recreational aspect educational and enjoyable.Ernie Olson of the Recreation and Leisure Department, uses the ropes course and many other programs in his classes. “I would like to see it remain free, but I think the money is worth it,” Olson said.
Katy Nicholls, a senior in recreation and leisure studies said, ” I think it?s worth it! Other places charge more and are farther away.” Nicholls is on the water ski team, and which has used the programs before. Peak Adventures helped communication between team members and encouraged strategy building, she said.
Peak Adventures also has programs involving the community. There are corporate programs designed to provide professional companies opportunities to increase communication skills while learning techniques at problem solving. There are also community programs involving the youth in grades 4 through 12. Students who would like to participate, should call Scott at 278-4897.
