Monkeybone swings to big screen

Cindy Vincent

Few people can turn on the television today without seeing the adorable, yet menacing, portrait of upcoming movie star, Monkeybone.

Monkeybone is not only the name of the computer animated monkey, but also the name of the upcoming hit movie itself, starring Brendan Fraiser as Stu Miley and Bridget Fonda as his loving girlfriend, Julie.

Stu is about to get the biggest break of his career, having his hit comic strip, featuring Monkeybone, become a national television show. Along with that, Stu intends to ask his girlfriend Julie to marry him. But on the night he plans to propose, Stu is nearly killed in a freak accident, leaving him helpless in a coma.

While comatose, Stu’s soul ends up in a purgatory-like existence, surrounded by mythical creatures with a carnival setting for a backdrop. In this world, Stu’s alter ego Monkeybone springs to life to try and escape “Downtown” and get back to the real world.

This is only the beginning of what promises to be a most humorous and entertaining movie about one man’s quest in trying to defeat evil and return to his perfect world.

Henry Selick, the director of “Monkeybone” and also “The Nightmare before Christmas” went to great lengths to ensure that this movie would be a success.

By using a stop-motion technique in creating the characters, Selick believes that it will add a “very specific charm” as well as a “hand-crafted quality” to the movie.

If the adorable monkey doesn’t drag you to the movie, than the promise of non-stop laughter will be sure to get you in the theaters. Monkeybone will be coming to theaters spring 2001.
