Sactown Sounds: Persephone?s Bees
November 6, 2000
Persephone?s Bees is a band so tight they could hold water.
The Bees combine psychedelic, lounge, funk and Brit into their retro candy-pop act, nominated for Best pop act in San Francisco?s Wammies Event. Their last gig in Sacramento was at The Boardwalk in Orangevale, Oct. 13.
Based in Oakland, the group has spent many nights playing at the Cafe Du Nord on Market St. in San Francisco.
The lead singer is a Russian woman by the name of Angelina Moysov. Moysov palys the keyboard and occasionally handles a tambourine.
Her accent cuts through at first as she introduces a song and adds a great touch to her vocals.
Tom Ayres, on guitar, manhandles his leads, at the same time adding crazy effects. He?s adept and playing alongside Mike Farrell (on bass this time) it’s hard to imagine how the band ended up with two of the best guitarists in town. Farrell formerly of Daisyspot and the late Sex66, has been with the band for six months. Although a little more sedate in his role as a bassist, you can still feel the Farrell in his riffs. A personal favorite is P?s B?s “City of Love,” a real funky disco-like number, in which his bass-line sets him loose across the stage like he is prone to doing all the time.
The riffs make perfect support for Ayres and Moysov. Paul Bertolino gets to vary his beats to the Bee?s different sounds.
