Opera Theatre closes with comedy
November 29, 2000
The Sacramento State Opera Theatre will finish off the fall semester with “Comedy Tonight: Three One-Act Comic Operas.” The show begins at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the University Theatre.
The “one weekend show,” said Opera Director Lynn Stradley, “continues the angle” of comedy.
Of the three one-acts to be performed in English are Giovanni Pergolesi’s “La Serva Padrona” (The Maid as Mistress), Mozart’s “Bastien and Bastienna,” and “Gallantry” by Douglas Moore.
“The principal performers,” Stradley said, “will be from last semester’s ‘The Marriage of Figaro,'” however, the Sacramento State orchestra will not be present.
“We’re on a limited budget,” Stradley said, who feels that the piano accompaniment to be supplied by graduate student Melanie Bietz and staff accompanist Roy Sanchez will be more than adequate for the three one-acts.
“La Serva Padrona,” the first one-act to be performed, will feature Lucas Harbour, Sarah Price and Joseph Evans and will be directed by graduate student John Philpott, who played Count Almaviva in “The Marriage of Figaro” and who will also perform in “Gallantry.”
Mozart’s “Bastien and Bastienna” will be performed by Timothy Pastore, who will also sing in “Gallantry,” Summer Miniaci and Danny Kummer, and will be directed by Stradley.
Finishing up the night of comedy will be Moore’s “Gallantry,” which Stradley, who will direct, calls “a spoof of a soap opera.”
The performances will continue through Saturday, with all shows beginning at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre. Tickets are $8 general, $5 for students and senior adults. Tickets can also be purchased in advance through Sacramento State’s Central Ticket Office or at the door.
