Last days for art exhibit

Antonio Harvey

The art exhibit by Nancy Sherwood, “Art work on the Front,” will end Friday, Nov. 17.

The exhibit is are located in the University Union’s gallery on the second floor.

Sherwood’s oil paintings display the ‘larger-than-life’ style. The paintings, which are on oil board canvas, range from 80×30 inches to 80×28. Basically, they are the size of a door.

“The format holds you,” Sherwood said about the paintings’ dominant presence. “You have to create the picture for the format.”

The series was motivated by a trip to the hardware store, Sherwood said. She noticed the brightness of colored gumballs while walking past a gumball machine.

“Color in these works is mostly intuitive, though information I gained several years ago in a very thorough color theory class is always in the back of my mind when I paint,” she said of the beginning stages the series.

Sherwood also said that the paintings, done in astronomical angles, are symbols of her character.

“These paintings reflect my essence, my ugliness, my grief, my silliness and my hope,” she said.

The exhibit lounge is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday-Friday.
