When you think of spring break you think of fun in the sun in Mexico or Florida, but come 2001 many will turn to sunny Southern California.

Just when you thought that Mickey’s hometown had it all, a new attraction is opening soon.

Feb. 8, 2001 marks the opening of Disney’s California Adventure. The new theme park celebrates the tradition and diversity in California.

Located adjacent to Disneyland, Disney’s California Adventure guests will soon be able to explore three specially themed lands.

The “lands” include “Paradise Pier,” the ultimate beachfront amusement zone filled with attractions such as a six-passenger car roller coaster; “Hollywood Pictures Backlot,” which will be featuring shows and attractions celebrating the magic of movie making and “The Golden State,” which will be paying tribute to California’s wilderness.

Two other features included in this expansion are the elaborate 750-room, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Downtown Disney, which is an exciting shopping center with great entertainment, theaters and dining venues.

Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel is a first for a Disney hotel because the 750-rooms are actually built inside the theme park. The hotel is due to open early January of 2001. Downtown Disney holds many entertainment and retail operations such as Naples Ristorante and Pizzeria, La Brea Bakery and a club called Y Arriba! Y Arriba!. Downtown Disney will officially open its’ doors on Friday, Jan. 12, 2001.

“This Grand Opening signals the completion of the largest expansion in the 45-year history of The Disneyland Resort,” said president of Walt Disney Attractions, Paul Pressler. “Disney’s California Adventure, when combined with the compelling magic and fun of Disneyland, truly transforms out Resort into a world-class destination.”

This is the largest expansion in the Anaheim resort’s 45-year history.
